Overview

Physics forms the cornerstone of natural sciences and engineering, driving breakthroughs in science and technology. Since the inception of the Department of Applied Physics in 1980, the School of Physics has cultivated a distinct approach that prioritizes engineering integration while emphasizing foundational physics research. This distinctive blend has given rise to key research areas that encapsulate our commitment to innovation:

(1) Exploration of Fundamental Principles: Our research delves into the frontiers of physics, with a focus on engineering applications. We now span various subfields, including condensed matter physics, atomic and molecular physics, acoustics, and theoretical physics. Our expertise extends to dominant research areas like 2D material manipulation, 2D spintronic devices, quantum precision measurements, low-dimensional structure design, and noise testing, analysis, and control.

(2) Interdisciplinary Collaboration: We value the synergy between physics and other fields, resulting in unique research avenues. By merging physics with electronics, materials, information, and mechanical engineering, we've developed research directions encompassing nano-functional devices, novel spintronic devices, advanced hetero-film technology, electromagnetic aircraft protection, optical measurement advancements, and nuclear medical imaging.

(3) Expert Faculty: The physics program is led by a dedicated faculty team of 26 master’s advisors, including 11 professors and 25 associate professors. They bring extensive teaching and research experience, having successfully completed over 40 research projects in the past five years. These projects include contributions to the National Key R&D Program, National Natural Science Foundation, Anhui Provincial Natural Science Foundation, and other horizontal initiatives. Our faculty has authored nearly 100 academic papers indexed by SCI in international journals and holds close to 20 authorized invention patents. Our teaching facilities boast the Ministry of Education’s Collaborative Research Center for Applied Physics and the Anhui Provincial University Physics Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.

Education Objectives

Our primary objective is to nurture highly skilled individuals who can meet the demands of national economic development and social progress. We aim to achieve their well-rounded development in ethics, intellect, physical abilities, and aesthetics. These individuals will acquire knowledge in diverse fields, including physics, mathematics, material science, optics, and information science, along with the associated experimental methods and techniques. They will also be equipped to comprehensively grasp the cutting edge of physics-related research, formulate research questions, tackle challenges, and foster continuous innovation. The specific goals include:

(1) A profound comprehension of Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, along with unwavering commitment to the four cardinal principles, patriotism, legal compliance, and exemplary conduct. Students should prioritize national interests and actively contribute to socialist modernization.

(2) A solid foundation in theoretical knowledge and relevant experimental techniques in the physics domain.

(3) The ability to independently conduct scientific research in the field of physics and produce innovative outcomes.

(4) A strong foundation in mathematics, advanced language skills, and proficiency in foreign languages.

(5) Proficiency in computer operation, adeptness in scientific computing, paper writing, literature research, and the utilization of modern information technology to gather pertinent information.

(6) A rigorous and pragmatic scientific mindset, a strong sense of teamwork, and essential organizational and managerial capabilities.

Research Directions

(1) Experimental Condensed Matter Physics: This area is aligned with national strategic objectives in information and energy. It focuses on exploring new two-dimensional material systems, elucidating the mechanisms behind emerging quantum effects, and designing innovative electronic devices.
